The discussion about grades and student development is a classic one. Students mostly use it as an excuse to their parents and teachers, mentioning how grades don’t define their intelligence. Research has also shown for years that grades can simply test some capabilities of students, if not all, and it is not the ultimate defining factor for them.
To address this question, we have to first understand how grading works. The ERP for schools focuses mostly on creating successful students by measuring their scores.
Purpose of scoring systems
The main reason to grade scores is to inform their parents how well they are doing academically. Lately, schools have also started scoring and awarding children in case they participate in extracurricular activities and do well in those.
Since there were not enough opportunities for students back in the days, who take a keen interest in extracurricular activities and artistic subjects rather than their academic ones, the focus of the school was academically only. Times have changed and the question has become more prevalent in the lives of students and parents. Scores are being allotted to students over their general performance, and not just their academic ones. The rise of opportunities has led to the importance of a grading system for the development of other skills too.
In the grading system, these things are kept in mind;
- They are unbiased scores, not based on favoritism. Hence students are advised only to write their roll numbers and not names on top of sheets.
- Be well informed, and ready with a spare dancer sheet, to avoid marking wrongly.
- Go through double checking in case teachers have marked something wrong, or have missed adding marks in some places.
- Software for school management could be set up to grade students to meet all the above objectives and reduce the chances of error.
Advantages of grading
- Helps students improve by observing their mistakes, and following the advice of teachers on how to improve on these mistakes.
- Allows the student to fix their target, and assess how far they have reached by observing their grades.
- Encourages students to work harder. Competition in the class can promote this, but only up to a certain extent.
- Students become objective and work hard to attain grades, which leads to their development in the subject.
- Informs parents about the performance of a student. They can guide students accordingly, giving them the necessary attention to their scores and performing better.
- Develops a competitive spirit that allows them to perform better not only in the subject but also in overall aspects of life.
Affect Of Grades
Sometimes a grade can impact students negatively, and not bring out the desired effect. The intention of a grading system is not to compare them with others and make them have low esteem because some students don’t score that well. It aims to establish a competitive environment in the classroom which can help students perform better than how they had previously.
Especially when teachers start helping smart, and well-scoring students, others have more confidence and self-esteem issues, creating a division. This is called the superiority and inferiority complex, which can be a problem in the long term.

Solving harmful effects
An educator’s main task is to ensure that the quality of education students receive remains consistent throughout the semester. They enjoyed taking regular tests on every subject. Every student must attend these examinations, and score well to pass the examinations. However, the examinations should not be held on academic subjects only. We first need to solve the problem of assessing students according to their academic values and focus more on their overall skill development.
Eventually, a school management system can eliminate the process of criticizing students poorly. First, every child should be aware of why they are being judged based on their scores. Only then will they be in the right mindset to accept their grades as a means of a measure of their intelligence.
Secondly, the ranking system could be replaced. When students are ranked first, second and third, a teacher intends to reward them. It could be done once a year when the final results are out. Constantly ranking students the best in our class could make others have self-esteem issues.
Conclusion
Grades should be used as a means to measure the intelligence of students, and not judge their long time success rate. It is not the grading system that is at fault, it is how students, teachers, and parents perceive it to be which creates the trouble.
